Portfolio Description

A modern front-end build for ZIAS Architects, one of the most established architecture and engineering practices working in Ethiopia. ZIAS Design International has been in practice since 2006, is registered as a Category 1 consulting architecture and engineering firm - the classification that allows a practice to take on projects of any size - and works across the United States and eastern, western and southern Africa from offices in Reston, Virginia and Addis Ababa.

Their built work includes Abrehot Library, at 19,000 square metres the largest library in Ethiopia, alongside the 34-storey Al Amoudi Tower and a series of high-rise residential developments in Addis Ababa. A practice with that record needs a website that behaves like a portfolio, not like a brochure.

What we built

This was a front-end engagement: the interface, the presentation of the work, and the performance of the thing on a real connection.

  • A project-led architecture, so the buildings are the navigation rather than something buried two levels under a services menu.
  • Full-bleed photographic layouts that hold up at the scale architectural photography is shot for, without making the page heavy.
  • Responsive image delivery in modern formats, so a gallery-heavy site still loads quickly on Ethiopian mobile connections.
  • A typographic system with enough restraint to let the photography carry the page, which is the whole job on an architecture site.
  • Accessible, keyboard-navigable galleries and navigation, tested rather than assumed.

Challenge and solution

  • Architectural photography is the content and the page weight at the same time - resolved with pre-generated responsive variants in modern formats rather than by compressing the images until the work stopped looking like the work.
  • A practice working across three continents needed one site that reads correctly to a client in Addis Ababa and a client in Virginia, without maintaining two of them.
