Portfolio Description

Ethio Fidelity Securities S.C. is a licensed Ethiopian securities dealer and a genuine first: the first independently established dealer to secure full trading membership of the Ethiopian Securities Exchange, licensed by the Ethiopian Capital Market Authority and backed by around forty private shareholders rather than by a parent bank.

We built their public platform and the brokerage account opening journey behind it, plus the back office that administers what comes through it. A dealer without a bank behind it has no branch network to lean on, so the account opening flow is not a marketing form - it is the front door of the business.

Brokerage account opening

Opening a securities trading account is a regulated process, and the work is in making something compliant also feel possible to finish. Most people opening one in Ethiopia are doing it for the first time, on a phone, with no prior experience of capital markets.

  • A staged online application that saves progress, so a prospective investor is never one dropped connection away from starting again.
  • Document capture for identity and address verification, with client-side validation that rejects an unreadable upload at the point it is taken rather than three days later.
  • Structured collection of the investor profile and suitability information the account type requires.
  • Clear status visibility for the applicant - submitted, under review, information required, approved - because the most common support call is simply asking where the application has got to.
  • Built for Ethiopian mobile connections, which is how the overwhelming majority of applicants arrive.

Back office and website management

The administrative side is where an account opening system either saves the firm time or quietly costs it more than paper did.

  • A review queue for the compliance team: applications in one place, documents attached, with decisions and reasons recorded against each.
  • Role-based access so review, approval and administration are separated rather than everyone sharing one login.
  • An audit trail on every state change - who did what, when - which is the baseline expectation for a regulated financial firm.
  • Content management for the public site, so announcements, notices and market information can be published by the firm without a developer.
  • Reporting on application volume, stage and drop-off, so the firm can see where prospective investors are giving up.

Why it mattered

Ethiopia's capital market is being built from nothing, and the ESX only began trading recently. Everything an established market takes for granted - onboarding, custody, investor records - is being stood up for the first time, by firms that are themselves new.

Ethio Fidelity's distinction is that it did it without a bank behind it. That is the interesting part of the engagement: the platform is not a channel alongside branches, it is the operation.
