Abay Car & Machinery is an Addis Ababa marketplace for buying, selling and renting vehicles and heavy equipment - economy cars and SUVs at one end, excavators and construction machinery at the other.

We built the listing platform and the back office behind it. The hard part is not the catalogue; it is that a rental fleet is a moving target. Availability changes daily, pricing varies by duration, and an inventory that is wrong is worse than no inventory at all, because a customer who books something already out is a customer lost twice.

The listing platform

Two very different audiences arrive on the same site: someone hiring a car for a week, and a contractor pricing a machine for a six-month project. The interface has to serve both without becoming two sites.

  • Browsable inventory across cars, SUVs, 4x4s, luxury vehicles, trucks and heavy machinery, each with specifications, photography and current pricing.
  • Search and filtering by category, vehicle type, capacity and rental duration, so a contractor can narrow to the machine class they need rather than scrolling a catalogue.
  • Separate rental and sale flows, since the questions a buyer asks are not the questions a hirer asks.
  • Enquiry and booking requests captured against a specific unit, so the office knows which vehicle is being asked about before they pick up the phone.
  • Long-term lease and with-driver options surfaced as part of the listing rather than buried in a terms page.
  • Built for mobile first, because a site browsed from a construction site is browsed on a phone.

The back office

Everything customer-facing depends on the operations team being able to keep the fleet accurate without touching code.

  • Full inventory management: add, edit, retire and duplicate listings, with image upload and specification fields per category.
  • Availability and status control, so a unit that is out on hire stops appearing as bookable.
  • Pricing management by duration band - daily, weekly, monthly and long-term lease - held per unit rather than as a global rule.
  • An enquiry and booking queue with status tracking, so nothing sits unanswered and the team can see what is outstanding.
  • Role-based administrator access, with an audit trail on inventory and pricing changes.
  • Category and taxonomy management, so a new class of machinery does not require a developer.

Challenge and solution

  • Vehicles and heavy machinery need completely different specification fields - engine capacity means nothing on an excavator - so the listing model is category-driven rather than one fixed schema stretched over both.
  • Rental pricing is not a single number: the same unit has a daily rate, a weekly rate and a long-term lease rate, and the site has to show the right one for what the customer is actually asking.
  • Listing photography arrives from phones in inconsistent sizes, so images are processed into consistent responsive variants on upload rather than served as shot.
