The map pack is where local intent converts. How to claim, correct and rank a Google Business Profile in Addis Ababa, and why NAP consistency decides it.
Local SEO in Ethiopia is mostly three things: a claimed and accurate Google Business Profile, name-address-phone details that are byte-identical everywhere you are listed, and a steady flow of genuine reviews. The map pack is a separate index from web search, which is why a good website can still be invisible locally.

Why your website ranking has nothing to do with this
The three business listings with a map above the normal results - the map pack - are drawn from a different index. They come from Google Business Profiles, not from web pages.
This catches people out constantly. A company invests in its website, ranks respectably for its service, and remains invisible to somebody searching on a phone for that service nearby - because it has no profile, or has one created years ago with a phone number nobody answers.
For most Ethiopian businesses serving customers in a place, the map pack is where the high-intent traffic is. Somebody searching for a clinic near them is not doing research; they are choosing.
NAP consistency decides more than anything else
Name, address and phone - NAP - has to be identical everywhere your business appears. Not similar. Identical.
Google establishes that a business is real by seeing consistent details across independent sources. When your website says one thing, your profile says another and 2merkato says a third, none of them corroborate each other, and the listing that would have ranked does not.
The inconsistencies we find most often in Ethiopia:
| Inconsistency | Why it happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Different phone format | +251 9..., 09..., and 2519... across three listings | Pick one format and use it everywhere, including on the website |
| Building named differently | "Alfoz Plaza" versus "Alfoz Plaza, Gerji" versus a different building entirely | Write the address once, in full, and copy it verbatim thereafter |
| Sub-city missing or wrong | Addis Ababa addresses often omit the sub-city, and several buildings share a name | Always include the sub-city - it is what disambiguates |
| Old office still listed | A move that never propagated to directories nobody remembers creating | Audit every listing that mentions you and correct or remove it |
| Trading name versus registered name | Legal name on one listing, brand on another | Choose the name customers use, and use it consistently |
Search your business name and your phone number and see what comes back. Directory profiles created by third parties are common in Ethiopia, frequently carry a stale address, and are exactly the kind of contradiction that suppresses a listing.
This is free to check and often free to fix. Do it before spending anything on local SEO.
Getting the profile right
- Claim and verify itVerification can take time in Ethiopia and it is not optional - an unverified profile carries far less weight and cannot be fully managed.
- Choose the primary category carefullyThe single most influential field on the profile. It should be what you are, in Google's vocabulary, not the most impressive-sounding option. Add secondary categories for the rest.
- Complete every fieldHours, service area, services, attributes, description. Completeness itself is a signal, and empty fields are answers a customer has to go elsewhere for.
- Add real photographsThe premises, the team, the work. Stock photography is obvious and does nothing. Photographs are frequently the deciding factor between three listings that otherwise look alike.
- Ask for reviews, steadilyVolume, recency and responses all matter. A steady trickle beats twenty reviews in one week, which looks exactly like what it is. Reply to all of them, including the negative ones - especially those.
- Post updates and keep hours currentParticularly around holidays. Wrong hours generate a specific and unforgiving kind of negative review.
