How to Build a Website in Ethiopia: The Complete 2026 Guide
What it actually takes to build a website in Ethiopia: registering a .et domain, choosing hosting, adding Telebirr and Chapa payments, and what every step costs.
Building a website in Ethiopia takes four things: a domain name, hosting, the site itself, and a payment gateway if you sell online. A basic business site costs 18,000 to 85,000 ETB and takes three to six weeks. You can register a .et domain through Ethio Telecom, or a .com in minutes.

The four things every website needs, and what each one actually is
Most guides make this sound more complicated than it is. A website is four separate purchases, and confusing them is why people get quoted wildly different numbers by different companies.
You can buy all four from one supplier or from four different ones. Knowing which is which is what stops you being overcharged.
- 1. The domain nameYour address - yourcompany.com or yourcompany.et. You rent it yearly, you never own it outright, and it should be registered in your company's name, not your developer's. This is the most common way Ethiopian businesses lose control of their own website.
- 2. The hostingThe computer your website lives on, rented monthly or yearly. Cheap shared hosting is fine for a normal business site. You only need something larger when you have real traffic or an online shop with many products.
- 3. The website itselfThe design, the pages, the text and the photographs. This is the part that costs real money, and the part that decides whether anyone contacts you after landing on it.
- 4. A payment gateway, only if you sell onlineTelebirr, Chapa or CBE Birr, so customers can pay on the site. Skip this entirely if you are not selling. Most business websites do not need it, and paying for it is money wasted.
If a developer registers the domain under their own account, they control your business address. Changing supplier later means either paying them to release it, or starting again on a new domain and losing every Google ranking you built.
Ask for the registrar login before you pay the final invoice. Any honest developer hands it over without argument.
Registering the domain: .et or .com?
A .et domain is Ethiopia's country extension, administered by Ethio Telecom. A .com is the international default. Neither ranks better than the other on Google - the choice is about what your customers expect, and how fast you need it.
| .et and .com.et | .com | |
|---|---|---|
| Registered through | Ethio Telecom portal | Any international registrar |
| Time to activate | Around 2 working days | Minutes |
| Typical cost per year | About 1,000 - 2,500 ETB | About 1,500 - 3,000 ETB |
| Payment method | Bank transfer or mobile banking against an invoice | Card, which needs one that works internationally |
| Best for | Signalling you are a local Ethiopian business | Speed, and anyone selling outside Ethiopia |
Restricted extensions - .gov.et, .edu.et and .mil.et - are limited to qualifying organisations. Prices move; confirm current figures with the registrar before budgeting.
Registering a .et domain, start to finish:
- 1. Search the nameUse the Ethio Telecom portal to check whether the name you want is free. Have a second and third choice ready - short names in common words are mostly gone.
- 2. Place the orderComplete the order in the portal with your business details.
- 3. Wait for the invoiceEthio Telecom sends an invoice number and bank account details by email and SMS.
- 4. PayTransfer by mobile banking or at a bank branch, quoting the invoice number.
- 5. Point it at your hostingYour hosting company gives you two nameserver addresses. Enter them in the domain settings and the domain starts serving your site, usually within a few hours.
Choosing hosting, and whether it should sit in Ethiopia
Hosting inside Ethiopia loads marginally faster for local visitors and lets you pay in birr. Hosting abroad is usually more reliable, better supported and easier to move away from. For most businesses the difference in loading speed is smaller than the difference a well-built site makes.
What matters far more than location is whether the site is built efficiently. A heavy, badly built page on fast local hosting will still lose to a light page hosted abroad.
| Type | Yearly cost | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|
| Shared hosting, local provider | 8,000 - 25,000 ETB | Standard business websites |
| Shared hosting, international | 3,000 - 12,000 ETB | Sites able to pay in foreign currency |
| Cloud or VPS | 25,000 - 90,000 ETB | Online shops, heavy traffic, custom systems |
Ranges reflect commonly advertised Ethiopian and international rates in 2026, and vary with traffic, storage and support level.
Building the site: do it yourself, or hire someone?
This is the honest part. Not every business needs to hire an agency, and we would rather tell you that than sell you something you do not need.
Build it yourself if:
- You need a simple presence - who you are, what you do, how to call you - and nothing more.
- You have time to learn a website builder, and the patience for it to look approximately right rather than exactly right.
- Your budget is genuinely under about 20,000 ETB. At that level a template you build yourself beats anything you can buy.
Hire someone if:
- The website has to bring in enquiries or sales, not just exist. Design decisions stop being cosmetic at that point.
- You are selling online and need Telebirr, Chapa or card payments working correctly and securely.
- You need to rank on Google. That is structural work built in from the start, not something added afterwards.
- Your organisation is judged on how it looks - a hospital, a college, a law firm, a financial institution. A template reads as a template to exactly the people you need to impress.
Quotes under about 20,000 ETB almost always mean a purchased template with the demo content swapped out: no original photography, no search optimisation, and no support after handover.
That is not automatically wrong - for a very small business it can be exactly right. Just know that is what you are buying, so you are not surprised later.
Taking payments: Telebirr, Chapa and CBE Birr
If you are selling online, this is the step that delays projects most - not because it is technically hard, but because each provider has its own approval process and asks for documents businesses do not always have ready.
Chapa is usually the fastest route, because one Chapa integration covers Telebirr, CBE Birr, local bank accounts and international cards. Integrating Telebirr directly gives you lower fees per transaction and a longer approval process.
Have these ready before you apply, whichever provider you choose:
- A renewed business licence in the trading name you will use on the site.
- A TIN certificate.
- A business bank account in the company name - not a personal account.
- The website itself, live, with visible pricing, terms and a working contact page. Most providers will not approve an unfinished site.
- Identification for the owner or authorised signatory.
Merchant approval commonly takes two to four weeks. Businesses that wait until the website is finished before applying end up with a completed site sitting idle, unable to take a single order.
Start the application as soon as the site has a live address, even a temporary one.
What the whole thing costs, added up
| Type of site | Build cost | Domain + hosting, year one | First-year total |
|---|---|---|---|
| DIY, website builder | Your own time | 10,000 - 25,000 ETB | 10,000 - 25,000 ETB |
| Template site, small supplier | 18,000 - 35,000 ETB | 10,000 - 25,000 ETB | 28,000 - 60,000 ETB |
| Custom business website | 35,000 - 85,000 ETB | 10,000 - 30,000 ETB | 45,000 - 115,000 ETB |
| Online shop with local payments | 75,000 - 180,000 ETB | 25,000 - 60,000 ETB | 100,000 - 240,000 ETB |
| Custom platform or web system | 150,000 - 500,000+ ETB | 40,000 - 120,000 ETB | 190,000 - 620,000+ ETB |
Build cost is one-off. Domain and hosting recur every year. Figures reflect the Addis Ababa market in 2026 and assume you supply your own text and photographs; content writing and photography are normally quoted separately.
The number that surprises people is the recurring one. A website is not a single purchase - it is a purchase plus a yearly bill, and a site nobody renews disappears without warning the day the hosting lapses.
How long it takes
| Type of site | Time to build | What usually causes delay |
|---|---|---|
| Template site | 1 - 2 weeks | Waiting on your logo and text |
| Custom business website | 3 - 6 weeks | Content and photography, almost always |
| Online shop | 6 - 10 weeks | Payment provider approval, and product photography |
| Custom platform | 3 - 6 months | Scope changing after the build has started |
In nearly every delayed project we have run, the hold-up was not development. It was waiting for text, logos, product photographs, or a decision from someone who was travelling. Gather those before the work starts and you will finish at the fast end of every range above.
